THE JAMES GOODRICH WHITNEY CLINIC

ABOUT THE CLINIC

The Whitney Clinic is a program of the Institute which is designed to serve people who want to participate in Jungian psychotherapy but who cannot afford the cost of private analysis. Our patients include women and men of varying ages, races and ethnic backgrounds. They are straight and gay, single and partnered.

Many of our patients are going through painful life transitions (unemployment or separation) which bring financial stress, many are students (graduate and undergraduate), and a good number are people involved in the arts. We place a high value on the individual. We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, or religion.

What is Jungian psychotherapy?

Swiss psychiatrist C.G. Jung (1875-1961), one of the pioneers of depth psychology, developed a form of psychotherapy whose guiding goal is to foster individuation.

Individuation means becoming who you uniquely are. Jungian psychotherapy aims at relating our conscious selves with our unconscious selves so that we can live a more complete life as the individuals that we are truly meant to be.

Jungian psychology sees our symptoms --the painful and disturbing issues in our lives-- as gateways to this process of individuation. Jungian psychology –also known as analytical psychology—welcomes images, dreams and fantasies as harbingers of growth, and honors the sacred in all its forms. It brings our many complex selves into conversation with one another in the confidential person-to-person exchange of psychotherapy. Along with relief from pain, it aims toward enlarged consciousness and a sense of aliveness.

Who are the Clinic therapists?

Jeff Swanger, PhD is our  Clinic Director.  Our therapists include advanced interns in clinical and counseling psychology, licensed psychotherapists in the Institute’s training program and certified Jungian analysts who are members of the Institute. All our therapists adhere to the high ethical and clinical standards set by the State of California, organizations of licensed professional psychotherapists and the Jung Institute itself.

What does therapy cost?

We use a sliding-scale fee schedule. We calculate fees based on income and (where applicable) number of dependents.  This scale applies regardless of whether the therapist is an intern, candidate or analyst. You are welcome to call the Clinic to review our fees. 415.771.8055, ext 205.

How long does it last?

We have no pre-set time limit for therapy at the Clinic. Our goal is to work deeply rather than to work briefly. It is not uncommon for patients to work with their therapists for a year or more. And of course, patients are free to end therapy at any time.

What is a psychotherapy session like?

You would usually meet with your therapist once a week for fifty minutes. During that time you would talk with him or her about whatever is on your mind. You might include your dreams and fantasies. You might focus on solving a problem or clarifying a situation. We also have facilities for including painting, drawing and sandplay therapy in our work.

How do I apply to the Clinic?

The process is simple. First we have a brief conversation with you by phone – completely confidential and free of charge. If it seems that we might be a good match for your needs and goals, we make an appointment for a face-to-face Intake Interview with one of our therapists. Intake Interviews are always at our minimum fee. Once the mutual agreement is made to begin therapy, most new patients can start working with their therapist within one to two weeks, at an agreed-on fee.

How can I contact the Clinic to apply or to ask more questions?
